Hough End Griffins Junior Football Club began with a simple idea: that every child should have the chance to play football, feel part of a team, and enjoy the game in a positive environment.

Founded in 2005 by a group of local parents, the club was created to provide accessible grassroots football for children in South Manchester.

What started as a small community initiative has grown into a thriving volunteer-led club supporting hundreds of young players every year.

From the outset, Hough End Griffins JFC was built around the belief that football should be inclusive, affordable, and welcoming to all. The club was rooted in the local community, serving families from neighbourhoods across South Manchester including Chorlton, Withington, Burnage, Fallowfield, Moss Side and Whalley Range.

Parents, volunteers, and coaches worked together to create an environment where children could enjoy football without the pressure that can come with competitive sport. The focus was always on participation, development, and enjoyment. Over time, the club steadily grew as more families discovered the supportive atmosphere and strong community spirit that defined the Griffins.

Today, Hough End Griffins JFC supports more than 350 young players aged 5–18. Despite this growth, the club remains entirely volunteer-run, with coaches, organisers and committee members giving their time to provide safe, structured and enjoyable football for young people in the local community.

The club is guided by the belief that players should be “Individually Brave, Collectively Strong.” Young players are encouraged to express themselves, try new things and build confidence, while learning the importance of teamwork. Our values - Commitment, Teamwork, Fair Play and Respect - shape the environment on and off the pitch.

One of the most exciting developments in recent years has been the growth of girls’ football. From just two girls in the club a few years ago, around 90 girls now play regularly. The club runs multiple girls’ teams and continues to expand opportunities, supported by a thriving Wildcats programme.

For the Griffins community, football is about more than the game. The club aims to help young people build confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging in a safe, inclusive environment. Keeping football affordable and accessible remains central to the club’s mission.

More than twenty years after it began, Hough End Griffins JFC continues to grow while staying true to the values it was founded on.

The club’s future ambitions include expanding opportunities for girls’ football, developing young players into coaches and referees, and strengthening the community that has supported the Griffins since the beginning.

What started in 2005 as a small group of local families has become something much bigger - a club where hundreds of young people can play, grow, and belong.
